Girls MESH (Measuring Emotion Socialization At Home) Study

Girl in Class

Understanding Parenting Behavior During Discussions of Sadness & Worry

In the Measuring Girls’ Emotion Socialization at Home (Girls MESH) Study, we sought to understand how parents respond to their daughter’s emotions. During the study, parents and their school-aged daughters completed two videorecorded discussions about times the girls felt sad/worried and times they felt happy, while their heart rate was continuously monitored. Parents and daughters also reported on how they felt during the conversations. Research from this study addresses questions such as how in-the-moment internal factors (e.g., parents' physiological and emotion reactivity) influence how parents respond to their daughters' emotions during these discussions. Results are forthcoming!
